update()

Applies a patch — or an updater function — to a row, returning the new value.

SPIKE (specs/immutable-updates.md). The immutable alternative to mutating a change-tracked proxy. Two things make it different from entity.price = 9:

  1. It returns the new value; it does not modify the one you passed.
  2. Your reference only has to identify the row, not be current. The patch is applied to whatever the collection holds now, so handing it a stale entity is safe — which is the failure mode that actually loses data. It also makes read-modify-write correct, because the updater receives the current value:

Arrays and Dates are values: a patch replaces them rather than merging into them. That is deliberate — element-wise array merging makes "drop the last tag" inexpressible, and it is the ambiguity that made in-place array mutation unreliable under proxies (defect #12).

joinSide()

What this collection looks like as the INNER side of someone else's join.

Public because a join is written from the other collection — players.join(matches, …) — and matches has to hand over three things it otherwise keeps to itself. Read JoinSide for why each is needed; the short version is that the scoped options are the ONLY place the inner side's soft-delete and .scope() filters exist once a join bypasses its read path.

Views implement this by extending this class, which is a requirement rather than a convenience: full-text search joins its index view to its source collection.
